The Power of Owning It: Why 100% Accountability Changes Everything
In leadership, there are moments that quietly redefine a culture.
Not because of a new strategy, a restructure, or a bold announcement, but because someone simply stands up and says, “This one’s on me.”
I recently watched a leader I respect do exactly that.
They apologised to their team for something they had abdicated. It wasn’t something they’d been hands on with day-to-day. They didn’t have direct line of sight to the issue. But as the leader of the business, they took full ownership anyway.
The impact was immediate.
What had been a source of frustration for eighteen to twenty four months suddenly lost its grip. The humility. The vulnerability. The absence of defensiveness. The whole team shifted and over the eight to ten hours we spent together, that single moment allowed the team to whoosh the past behind them and move forward united, focused, and energised about the year ahead.
It was a reminder that leadership isn’t about never getting it wrong. It’s about being accountable when it matters most.
From 0% to 100% A Lesson That Stuck
That moment brought me straight back to a concept that has stayed with me for years.
A few years ago, I worked closely with Nikk Hughes from Inspire Tribe who coached our team for around six to twelve months. One of the ideas that really landed, and still shapes how I think about leadership, was the concept of 0% to 100% accountability.
Not fifty percent.
Not my part.
Not what I directly control.
One hundred percent.
At zero percent accountability, responsibility lives everywhere else. This is below the equator thinking.
At one hundred percent accountability, ownership lives with the leader. This is truly living above the equator.
Here’s the paradox. When leaders genuinely step into one hundred percent accountability, it doesn’t create fear or pressure. It creates clarity, safety, and momentum for everyone else.
Why This Matters for Every Leadership Team
When leaders model one hundred percent accountability, a few important things happen.
Defensiveness drops away.
Trust increases.
Psychological safety improves.
Long standing issues finally move forward.
Most importantly, it gives managers and emerging leaders permission to do the same.
This isn’t just an owner issue.
If you have managers, team leaders, or anyone responsible for people and outcomes in your business, this mindset is foundational.

Interestingly, this exact theme is one of the reasons our recent leadership masterclass sold out so quickly.
We’ve had a huge response from clients who didn’t just register themselves. They brought their leadership teams with them. Owners. Managers. Future leaders. People responsible for outcomes and culture, not just titles.
Accountability isn’t a theory.
It’s a leadership skill that can be learned, practised, and embedded.
Looking Ahead Sounding Out Interest for Late 2026
Given the response and demand, we’re now considering running this masterclass again in the second half of 2026.
Before locking anything in, we want to gauge early interest. We already have a bunch of clients that missed out on the waiting list.
This is not just for business owners. It’s for anyone who leads people, manages outcomes, wants stronger trust and alignment in their team, and is ready to move from partial ownership to one hundred percent accountability. If that’s you, or if you have managers in your business who would benefit from this, we’d love to hear from you. No obligation. No commitment yet. Just a simple expression of interest so we can shape the next session around the people who need it most.
Cheers,
