The Power of Language: Why One Tiny Word Might Be Holding You Back 🧠💬
At EBS, we’re constantly exploring the subtle yet powerful forces that shape business success—and today, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the most underestimated tools in your leadership toolkit: language.
Your Words Shape Your World 🌍
Every word we speak influences how we think, feel, and act. Whether you’re speaking to a team member, a client, or even yourself, the language you use plays a pivotal role in how your message is received—and how your mindset is shaped.
Let’s zero in on a deceptively small but mighty word: “but.” ❌
You’ve likely used it today already. We all have. But here’s the thing (see what we did there?)—it’s a dismissive word. One that unconsciously negates whatever was said before it.
“I really appreciate your feedback… but I think you missed the point.”
“I love what the team’s done here… but we didn’t hit the target.”
“You did a great job… but next time try harder.”
In every one of these examples, the first statement—praise, acknowledgement, or agreement—is effectively cancelled out by what follows. It’s like handing someone a gift and then immediately taking it back.
Try This Instead: The Power of “And”
Now, imagine replacing “but” with “and.”
“I really appreciate your feedback… and I think we can build on it.”
“I love what the team’s done here… and we still have room to grow.”
“You did a great job… and next time we’ll aim even higher.”
See the difference? The second message doesn’t undo the first—it builds on it. The word and connects rather than cancels. It reinforces rather than rejects. It opens up possibility rather than shutting it down.
The “But Jar” Challenge 💸🫙
At EBS, we like to make learning fun—and tangible. That’s why we’ve introduced the But Jar.
Every time someone catches themselves saying the word “but,” they drop a dollar into the jar. At the end of the challenge, we donate those funds to one of the amazing charities we support through the Mission Abundance Foundation ❤️🌍
It’s a playful way to engage what we call the hip pocket nerve—and more importantly, to create lasting awareness around the language we use every day.
Why It Matters in Business (and Life) 💼💡
This isn’t just a fun experiment. It’s a strategic shift in communication.
Many leaders, coaches, and entrepreneurs unknowingly undermine team members or prospects simply by using “but.” Even in sales conversations, it can cost you rapport—or even the deal—when you unintentionally dismiss someone’s concern or insight.
One small word. One massive impact.
By replacing “but” with “and,” you signal respect, openness, and collaboration. You model a growth mindset. And you help your team, your clients, and yourself stay future-focused and solution-oriented.
Let’s Do This Together 🤝
So here’s your challenge:
Watch your words this week. Replace “but” with “and.” Create your own But Jar. And encourage your team to do the same. 🧠🗣️
Let’s rewire our language—one word at a time—to create more positive conversations, more powerful relationships, and more purposeful leadership.
Because at EBS, we believe that small shifts lead to transformational results. 🌱➡️🌳
